The Vice President of India, C. P. Radhakrishnan, paid tribute to one of the country’s most respected social reformers by unveiling a statue of Mannathu Padmanabhan and inaugurating the Mannam Smrithi Mandapam at the Mannam International Centre in Dwarka, New Delhi. The event marked an important moment in recognising the enduring contributions of a leader whose work in education, social reform and community empowerment continues to influence Indian society decades after his lifetime.

Organised by the Nair Service Society (NSS), Delhi, the programme brought together public representatives, community leaders and members of the organisation to celebrate the life and ideals of Mannathu Padmanabhan, the founder of the Nair Service Society. Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Tourism Suresh Gopi, NSS Delhi President M. K. G. Pillai, General Secretary M. D. Jayaprakash and several distinguished guests were also present during the ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice President described the memorial as much more than a commemorative structure. According to him, it represents a living reminder of the values that Mannathu Padmanabhan championed throughout his life—social justice, equality, education, self-reliance and national service. The Vice President noted that these ideals remain highly relevant in contemporary India, where inclusive growth and equal opportunities continue to be central to the country’s development journey.

Vice President Pays Tribute to a Visionary Social Reformer

During his address, the Vice President highlighted the remarkable life of Mannathu Padmanabhan, who is widely regarded as one of Kerala’s greatest social reformers and an influential freedom fighter.

He observed that Mannathu Padmanabhan dedicated his life to uplifting society by promoting education, encouraging community development and advocating equal opportunities for all sections of society.

The Vice President emphasised that his contributions extended far beyond the interests of any single community.

Instead, Mannathu Padmanabhan consistently believed that lasting social progress could only be achieved when justice, compassion and inclusiveness became guiding principles for society as a whole.

The Vice President remarked that these values continue to inspire people across different regions, religions and communities, making his legacy truly national in character.

Mannam Smrithi Mandapam Celebrates a Lasting Legacy

The inauguration of the Mannam Smrithi Mandapam represents another significant milestone in preserving the memory of one of India’s foremost social reformers.

According to the Vice President, memorials serve an important purpose beyond preserving historical memory.

They encourage future generations to understand the ideals and sacrifices of individuals who shaped society through their vision and leadership.

Rather than viewing the memorial simply as a monument, the Vice President described it as an educational and cultural space capable of inspiring young people to embrace values such as service, equality and nation-building.

He stressed that such institutions help bridge the past and the future by reminding citizens of the responsibilities that accompany social progress.

Education Was Central to Mannathu Padmanabhan’s Mission

One of the major themes highlighted by the Vice President was Mannathu Padmanabhan’s lifelong commitment to education.

During the early decades of the twentieth century, access to quality education remained limited for many communities across India.

Recognising education as the foundation of social empowerment, Mannathu Padmanabhan worked tirelessly to establish schools and educational institutions that could create opportunities for future generations.

The Vice President explained that these efforts transformed countless lives by enabling young people to pursue learning regardless of their social or economic background.

His emphasis on education continues to resonate strongly in present-day India, where knowledge and skills remain critical drivers of economic development and social mobility.

Community Participation Built Strong Institutions

Reflecting on the remarkable growth of the Nair Service Society, the Vice President praised the organisation for carrying forward the vision of its founder.

He recalled Mannathu Padmanabhan’s belief that lasting institutions are built through dedication rather than financial resources alone.

According to the Vice President, one of the reformer’s greatest achievements was his ability to mobilise ordinary citizens.

Instead of depending solely on wealthy benefactors, he encouraged families from different backgrounds to contribute modest amounts towards establishing schools, social institutions and community initiatives.

This model of collective participation strengthened both the organisation and the communities it served.

Today, the Nair Service Society continues to operate numerous educational institutions, charitable initiatives and social welfare programmes inspired by those original principles.

Vice President Appreciates NSS Delhi’s Contributions

The Vice President also commended the Nair Service Society’s Delhi chapter for preserving Kerala’s rich cultural heritage while simultaneously promoting educational and social development.

He noted that NSS Delhi has successfully expanded its presence to twenty-five branches across the Delhi-NCR region with nearly twenty-five thousand members.

The organisation actively promotes traditional art forms such as Kalaripayattu, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam, helping younger generations remain connected with Kerala’s cultural identity despite living far from their native state.

Alongside cultural preservation, the organisation continues to undertake educational and community welfare activities that reflect the broader philosophy established by Mannathu Padmanabhan.

The Vice President described these efforts as an excellent example of how cultural organisations can contribute meaningfully to national integration while serving local communities.

Ideals That Continue to Guide Modern India

Throughout his address, the Vice President repeatedly emphasised that Mannathu Padmanabhan’s philosophy remains relevant even today.

His commitment to equality, compassion and inclusive development aligns closely with many contemporary national priorities, including educational expansion, social empowerment and community participation.

The Vice President observed that meaningful development cannot be measured solely through economic growth.

Instead, genuine national progress requires creating opportunities that benefit every section of society while ensuring dignity and equal treatment for all citizens.

These ideas, first championed by Mannathu Padmanabhan many decades ago, continue to influence discussions surrounding social reform and nation-building in modern India.

Memorials Inspire Future Generations

The Vice President also reflected on the broader importance of memorials and public monuments.

According to him, such spaces preserve historical memory while simultaneously inspiring future generations to continue the unfinished work of nation-builders.

By remembering leaders who devoted their lives to public service, society reinforces values that remain essential for democratic development.

The Vice President encouraged citizens to carry forward Mannathu Padmanabhan’s vision by promoting education, equality, compassion and national unity in their everyday lives.

He suggested that the true tribute to any great reformer lies not merely in constructing monuments but in actively practising the principles they advocated.

Environmental Commitment Through ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’

The programme also included participation in the nationwide ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.

As part of the initiative, the Vice President planted a sapling at the Mannam International Centre.

The campaign, supported by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, encourages citizens to plant trees in honour of their mothers while contributing to environmental conservation.

The symbolic plantation reflected the growing emphasis on combining social responsibility with environmental sustainability.

It also reinforced the message that public service extends beyond social reform to include protecting natural resources for future generations.

Vice President Highlights Values That Remain Relevant

The event ultimately served as both a tribute to Mannathu Padmanabhan and a broader reflection on the values required for India’s continued progress.

Through the unveiling of the statue and inauguration of the memorial, the Vice President underlined the importance of preserving the legacy of leaders who dedicated their lives to education, equality, community service and national unity.

His address emphasised that these ideals continue to provide valuable guidance as India advances towards inclusive development and greater social harmony.

By recognising the contributions of visionary reformers such as Mannathu Padmanabhan, the Vice President reaffirmed that the nation’s future will be strengthened not only through economic advancement but also through a continued commitment to justice, compassion, education and collective responsibility—principles that remain as relevant today as they were during the lifetime of the distinguished social reformer.
