Major Infrastructure Upgrade Approved on Jammu–Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Section
Indian Railways has approved major slope stabilization, tunnel reconstruction, and bridge preservation works on the strategically important Jammu–Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway section of Northern Railway. The project, estimated at a cost of ₹238 crore, aims to strengthen the long-term safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of this challenging railway route.
The approved works include reconstruction activities at vulnerable locations, solutions for tunnel water seepage issues, slope stabilization measures, and other essential safety improvements along the Jammu–Mata Vaishno Devi Katra route.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that these initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring safe and reliable connectivity across some of the country’s most difficult terrains.
The Railway Minister said that the conservation and rehabilitation works were approved after detailed assessments of cuttings, bridges, and tunnels along the route. He added that these measures will significantly enhance the long-term safety and dependability of this strategically important railway section.

The Jammu–Mata Vaishno Devi Katra section has faced several engineering and operational challenges due to difficult terrain, complex geological conditions, and extreme weather situations. However, Indian Railways has continuously addressed these challenges through timely interventions, advanced engineering solutions, and infrastructure strengthening measures.
With the approval of new preservation and rehabilitation works, the route is expected to provide improved facilities and enhanced safety standards, ensuring more reliable services for millions of passengers travelling every year.
Reconstruction of Shastriya ROB at Indore Yard Approved at ₹139 Crore
Indian Railways has also approved a ₹139 crore project aimed at improving urban transportation infrastructure and strengthening rail-road connectivity in Madhya Pradesh.
Under this project, the Road Over Bridge (ROB) No. 103-C, popularly known as the Shastriya Bridge, located at Indore Yard, will be reconstructed.
The approved project includes the construction of a 72-metre-long, four-lane overbridge featuring a camel-back-shaped structure with PSC girders and a complete viaduct arrangement.
The new bridge has been designed to handle increasing traffic demand while ensuring smoother and safer movement for commuters.
To improve local traffic management and facilitate maintenance activities, 6-metre-wide service roads on both sides of the bridge will also be developed.
The reconstruction of the Shastriya Bridge is expected to significantly improve road connectivity in Indore, reduce traffic congestion, and make daily commuting easier for residents.
The project will also strengthen coordination between railway infrastructure and urban transportation systems, helping Indore meet its growing mobility requirements.
Strengthening of Bridge Infrastructure in Adra Division
Indian Railways has approved another major infrastructure project worth ₹223.58 crore under the South Eastern Railway’s Adra Division.
The project involves the construction of new bridge infrastructure for Bridge No. 520 Up and Down on the MDKD–DMA (Madhukunda–Damodar) section, along with related yard reconstruction and track works on bridge approaches.
The existing Damodar Bridge (Bridge No. 520) was constructed in different phases, with the UP line built in 1965 and the DN line dating back to 1903. Due to its age and signs of structural weakness, reconstruction of the foundation and substructure has become necessary.
The section is a crucial railway link between Asansol and Tatanagar and forms an important part of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) feeder route and coal corridor (Sini–Purulia–Asansol).
The route experiences heavy traffic movement with a density of approximately 67 GMT, making strengthening of bridge infrastructure essential for maintaining safe and efficient operations.
The redevelopment of this bridge infrastructure is expected to improve railway connectivity and provide benefits to major industries located in the Durgapur–Asansol region, including:
- IISCO Plant
- ACC Plant
- Thermal power units
The project will enhance safety, reliability, and operational efficiency while supporting industrial growth in the region.
New ROB at Gauripur Ends Traffic Delays and Improves Safety
The Northeast Frontier Railway has successfully completed the construction of a new Railway Over Bridge (ROB) at Gauripur, replacing level crossing gate No. CA-26 under the Alipurduar Division.
The ROB has been constructed between Gauripur and Alamganj stations at kilometre location 162/5-6.
Built according to National Highway standards, the bridge features a 10.50-metre-wide carriageway with a three-lane arrangement, ensuring smoother and more efficient movement of vehicles.
One of the key highlights of this structure is its 62-metre-long bow-string girder main span, which represents modern engineering capabilities and advanced construction techniques.
The newly constructed ROB will help eliminate traffic delays caused by railway crossings, improve road safety, and provide uninterrupted movement for commuters and transport vehicles.
