Genesis GV90 Enters the Electric Luxury SUV Race With 12 Airbags, 123.5kWh Battery and 490kW Power
Genesis GV90 has officially been unveiled as the brand’s first full-size electric flagship SUV, combining advanced safety technology, high-end luxury and powerful electric performance for the premium EV market. Revealed at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts, the new flagship will be available in two versions: the Genesis GV90 and the more exclusive GV90 Neolun.
Built on Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated eMP platform, the GV90 has been positioned as a high-end electric SUV capable of competing with established luxury models such as the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. Genesis is placing particular emphasis on technology, safety, interior refinement and passenger comfort, while the Neolun version takes the concept even further with an unusual coach-door layout and a four-seat Executive Suite.
Among the GV90’s most notable innovations is a roof-mounted airbag system that Genesis describes as the world’s first of its kind. The SUV also introduces a 123.5kWh battery, a 490kW dual-motor powertrain and a range of advanced chassis and infotainment technologies.

Genesis GV90 Gets a Distinctive Coach-Door Design
One of the biggest visual and functional highlights of the GV90 Neolun is its independently operated hidden B-pillar coach-door system.
Unlike a conventional SUV, where the front and rear doors open in the same direction with a fixed B-pillar between them, the GV90 Neolun’s front and rear doors open in opposite directions. This creates a significantly wider opening for passengers entering or leaving the vehicle.
Genesis has developed a dual-motion hinge mechanism to make the system possible. According to the company, the rear doors can move outward before opening, helping create the required clearance for the unusual door arrangement.
The design is intended to deliver more than visual drama. Genesis sees the wider opening as part of the vehicle’s premium passenger experience, particularly for occupants travelling in the rear.
Removing the conventional B-pillar, however, creates substantial structural and safety challenges. Genesis says the GV90 Neolun addresses these concerns through a reinforced body structure, high-strength steel beams integrated into the doors and a concealed roll cage designed to distribute crash forces.
The result is an unusual combination of limousine-inspired access and SUV practicality.
12 Airbags Include a New Roof-Mounted System
Safety is another major focus of the Genesis GV90.
The SUV is equipped with 12 airbags, including a roof-mounted airbag system that Genesis claims is the first of its type in the world. The system has been designed primarily with rollover protection in mind.
The roof airbag deploys across the panoramic glass area to help prevent occupants from being ejected and reduce the risk of injuries during a rollover situation.
Genesis has also equipped the vehicle with an in-cabin monitoring system. This technology can identify occupant position and usage conditions and adjust airbag and seatbelt operation accordingly.
The vehicle’s structure also incorporates lightweight aluminium components alongside ultra-high-strength steel. According to Genesis, the combination is intended to provide a balance between structural rigidity and weight management.
Battery protection is another important consideration in the electric SUV. Genesis says the battery is protected by dedicated safety measures and Thermal Runaway Protection technology.
A cloud-based Battery Management System can monitor the battery and identify potential issues, allowing warnings to be generated before problems escalate.
123.5kWh Battery Gives GV90 Long-Range Capability
Powering the Genesis GV90 is a substantial 123.5kWh battery pack.
Genesis describes this as the largest battery ever installed in a Hyundai Motor Group electric vehicle. The battery uses a new high-density cell design and a wireless battery management system.
The large battery is particularly important for a full-size luxury SUV because vehicles of this size typically require significant energy to deliver acceptable driving range.
Genesis claims the seven-seat GV90 can travel up to 500 kilometres on a single charge. The actual range in everyday conditions will depend on factors such as driving style, road conditions, weather and vehicle configuration.
The SUV also supports 350kW DC fast charging, allowing owners to take advantage of high-powered charging infrastructure where available.
The combination of a large battery and high-speed charging is designed to make the GV90 suitable not only for urban driving but also for longer journeys.
490kW Dual-Motor Setup Makes It Hyundai Motor Group’s Most Powerful EV Powertrain
The Genesis GV90 is powered by a new dual-motor electric powertrain producing 490kW of power and 800Nm of torque.
Genesis says the setup represents the most powerful electric powertrain yet developed by Hyundai Motor Group.
The high torque output is particularly suited to a large luxury SUV, providing strong acceleration and effortless performance without requiring a conventional internal-combustion engine.
Rather than focusing exclusively on outright performance, Genesis has designed the powertrain around the broader flagship experience. The goal is to provide smooth and quiet acceleration while maintaining the effortless character expected from a premium luxury vehicle.
The dual-motor arrangement also provides all-wheel-drive capability, giving the GV90 the traction expected from a high-end SUV.
Advanced Air Suspension and Rear-Wheel Steering
The GV90’s chassis has been engineered to balance comfort and handling.
The suspension combines multi-chamber air springs with electronically controlled dampers. This setup allows the vehicle to adjust its ride characteristics depending on road conditions and driving requirements.
Air suspension is particularly relevant to a luxury SUV because it can provide a smoother ride while allowing the vehicle’s height and suspension characteristics to be managed electronically.
The GV90 also features active rear-wheel steering with up to five degrees of movement.
At low speeds, rear-wheel steering can reduce the vehicle’s effective turning circle, making a large SUV easier to manoeuvre in tight spaces. At higher speeds, the system can improve stability and responsiveness during lane changes and cornering.
This combination is intended to make the GV90 feel more manageable despite its substantial dimensions.

Braking and Cabin Refinement
The Genesis GV90 uses large front brake discs combined with four-piston monobloc calipers. The braking hardware has been selected to provide the stopping performance required for a large and powerful electric SUV.
Genesis has also invested heavily in cabin isolation. Acoustic glass, additional sound-deadening materials and reinforced sealing measures are used in the Genesis GV90 to reduce outside noise.
Quietness is an important part of the premium EV experience because electric powertrains are already considerably quieter than conventional combustion engines. With fewer mechanical noises from the powertrain, road and wind noise can become more noticeable.
Genesis has therefore focused on creating a more isolated Genesis GV90 interior where passengers can enjoy conversations, entertainment and music with fewer external distractions.
Button-Free Power System and 25-Inch Head-Up Display
The Genesis GV90 introduces several technology features designed to make the vehicle feel more futuristic.
The Genesis GV90 becomes the first Hyundai Motor Group model to feature a button-free power system. The system automatically prepares the vehicle for driving when occupants enter, reducing the need for a conventional start-up procedure.
Inside the cabin, Genesis has also introduced a large OLED display that expands when the Genesis GV90 is parked. The feature is intended to provide a more immersive viewing experience when the SUV is stationary.
Another major highlight is a 25-inch head-up display, which replaces the traditional instrument cluster.
The system can project important driving information into the driver’s field of view, potentially reducing the need to look down at a conventional instrument panel.
New Pleos Connect Infotainment Platform
The Genesis GV90 is also among the brand’s most technologically advanced vehicles from an infotainment perspective.
It introduces the next-generation Pleos Connect platform, which is powered by Android Automotive OS.
The system is supported by the Gleo AI voice assistant, giving occupants another way to interact with vehicle functions and entertainment features.
The technology package also includes Remote Smart Parking Assist and Memory Reversing Assist.
These systems are particularly useful for the Genesis GV90 because parking and manoeuvring can be challenging in confined urban spaces.
An advanced 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system with Dolby Atmos further enhances the cabin’s entertainment capabilities.
Luxury Interior Designed Like a Private Lounge
Luxury remains at the heart of the Genesis GV90’s positioning.
The cabin features premium leather seats with massage functions, advanced ambient lighting and heated surfaces. Genesis has also incorporated acoustic enhancements to create a more relaxing environment for passengers.
The interior philosophy is designed around the idea of a lounge rather than simply a conventional vehicle cabin.
The Genesis GV90 Neolun takes this approach even further with a four-seat Executive Suite configuration.
The Executive Suite includes a real wood floor, a Smart Vision Roof with adjustable transparency, privacy blinds, a refrigerator and folding tables.
A dedicated comfort partition further separates the rear passenger area from the rest of the cabin, reinforcing the impression of a first-class travel environment.
This configuration makes the Genesis GV90 Neolun particularly relevant to customers who place a premium on chauffeur-driven travel and rear-seat comfort.
Genesis GV90 Design Inspired by Korea’s Moon Jar
The exterior design of the Genesis GV90 draws inspiration from Korea’s traditional moon jar.
Genesis has adopted a minimalist design philosophy, using clean surfaces, restrained detailing and carefully proportioned bodywork rather than excessive styling elements.
At the front, the SUV features Genesis’ signature Two-Line Micro Lens Array headlamps. These are integrated into the body using a laser-engraving process.
The front also features a sculpted dual-layer G-Matrix grille, creating a distinctive visual identity for the flagship Genesis GV90.
Measuring 5,285mm in length, the Genesis GV90 has the dimensions and road presence expected from a full-size luxury SUV.
The vehicle rides on large 24-inch forged wheels, further emphasising its premium positioning.
GV90 Neolun Adds Exclusive Exterior Details
The Genesis GV90 Neolun receives several visual differences compared with the standard version.
Anodised aluminium exterior accents provide a more sophisticated appearance, while the standard model uses flush-fitting glass and body surfaces to create a cleaner and more streamlined look.
At the rear, Genesis has avoided conventional styling elements such as a prominent spoiler.
Instead, the SUV features smooth body curves, slim surface-emitting taillights and minimalist Genesis badging.
This approach gives the Genesis GV90 a relatively understated appearance despite its large dimensions.
Can the GV90 Challenge the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV?
With the Genesis GV90, the brand is entering one of the most competitive areas of the luxury automotive market.
The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV has already established itself as a flagship electric luxury SUV, combining high-end materials, powerful electric performance and an emphasis on rear-seat comfort.
The Genesis GV90 takes a different approach by combining its large battery and advanced electric powertrain with unusual technologies such as the roof airbag and hidden B-pillar coach doors.
The four-seat Genesis GV90 Neolun Executive Suite also shows that Genesis is targeting buyers who expect limousine-style luxury from an SUV.
Its success in this segment will ultimately depend on factors beyond specifications, including pricing, availability, real-world range, charging performance, ride quality and the overall ownership experience.

Genesis GV90 Signals a New Direction for the Brand
The GV90 represents an important step in Genesis’ electric vehicle strategy.
With a 123.5kWh battery, 490kW dual-motor powertrain, 12-airbag safety package, advanced suspension technology and an extensive luxury interior, the SUV is designed to showcase the brand’s technological capabilities at the highest level.
The GV90 Neolun takes the concept further with coach doors and an Executive Suite designed around rear passenger comfort.
Rather than simply electrifying an existing luxury SUV formula, Genesis has used the GV90 to introduce new approaches to safety, cabin technology, design and passenger experience.
As the premium EV market becomes increasingly competitive, the GV90 gives Genesis a flagship product designed to compete on technology and luxury while establishing a distinct identity of its own.
