During testing, both the Default and 120Hz settings reduced the refresh rate to 60Hz when the display was idle. This helps prevent unnecessary power consumption when a high refresh rate is not required.

In Default mode, the interface uses 120Hz for important parts of the user interface, while many applications and settings menus operate at 60Hz or 90Hz. The dedicated 120Hz mode prioritises the highest available refresh rate for supported content.

The display also offers a 240Hz touch sampling rate, which can improve responsiveness when interacting with the touchscreen, particularly during gaming and fast-paced interactions.

The phone additionally uses 3840Hz PWM dimming, a technology intended to manage brightness through high-frequency modulation.

HDR and Streaming Experience

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max is well equipped for users who regularly consume streaming content.

Its display supports HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, with HDR content available across major streaming platforms. Testing found support for HDR playback on popular services including Netflix and YouTube.

In testing, the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max achieved an Active Use Score of 22 hours and 31 minutes, placing it among the strongest-performing smartphones in the test database.

The phone delivered more than 64 hours of talk time and lasted slightly more than 24 hours during web browsing.

Video streaming endurance was particularly strong, with the device recording approximately 38 hours of video playback.

Gaming endurance was lower at around 9 hours and 32 minutes. The difference between gaming and video playback is not unusual, as demanding games place substantially greater loads on the processor, graphics hardware and display.

The testing suggested that the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset may be less efficient under sustained gaming workloads compared with some competing platforms.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max also supports 27W reverse wired charging, allowing the smartphone to supply power to compatible accessories and other devices.

Xiaomi claims that the phone can reach 56% charge in 30 minutes and a full charge in approximately 64 minutes using the company’s 100W charger.

Testing broadly confirmed those claims. With Xiaomi’s 100W power adapter and the bundled 6A-rated USB-A-to-C cable, the phone charged from:

  • 1% to 33% in 15 minutes
  • 1% to 57% in 30 minutes
  • 1% to 100% in 61 minutes

Reaching a full charge in around an hour is notable considering the exceptionally large battery capacity.

The phone also includes an option called Boost Charge, which can be enabled when the screen is turned off to prioritise faster charging.

Battery Protection and Long-Term Health

Xiaomi has also focused on the long-term health of the battery rather than simply maximising charging speed.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max includes Smart Charging, which can adjust the charging process based on factors such as ambient temperature and usage.

There is also a Battery Protection mode that allows users to impose an 80% charging limit. Another option, called Intelligent Charging, can learn from usage patterns and adjust charging behaviour accordingly.

Xiaomi claims the battery can retain 80% of its original capacity after 1,600 charging cycles, with battery health expected to remain at or above that threshold for up to six years under the company’s stated conditions.

Such features could be useful for users planning to keep the smartphone for several years, as battery degradation is one of the most common concerns associated with long-term smartphone ownership.

Stereo Speakers

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max features a dual-speaker setup. The bottom speaker is larger and louder, while the top speaker doubles as an amplified earpiece.

The arrangement provides stereo sound and helps create a more balanced audio experience when holding the phone horizontally for video playback or gaming.

Xiaomi also provides 200% and 400% loudness boost options over the standard maximum volume.

At the standard 100% volume setting, testing recorded -26.8 LUFS, which was rated as a Good result. Audio quality was described as very good, with sufficient bass, clear vocals and balanced high frequencies.

When the 400% loudness mode was activated, the measured result improved to -24.3 LUFS, receiving a Very Good loudness rating. However, pushing the volume to this extreme level affected sound quality considerably.

At 400% volume, the speakers lost much of their low-end response, while the mids became less convincing and the high frequencies became more dominant. As a result, the standard volume setting may provide the better overall listening experience for users who prioritise audio quality.
