The Delhi Police’s Rajouri Garden Police Station has arrested an alleged auto lifter involved in multiple scooter theft cases across the area. The accused, identified as Vishal alias Rohit, was apprehended after an intensive surveillance operation carried out by the alert staff of PS Rajouri Garden. During the operation, police recovered three stolen two-wheelers and one illegal buttondar knife from his possession.

The successful arrest once again highlights the growing challenge posed by organized auto lifter gangs operating in metropolitan cities like Delhi, where two-wheelers remain one of the easiest targets for thieves. At the same time, the case also reflects the proactive policing, technical surveillance, and teamwork demonstrated by the West District Police in controlling street-level crime.

According to the official press release issued by the Delhi Police West District, the accused had allegedly been continuously involved in scooter thefts in the Rajouri Garden area. The police team tracked his activities through extensive field investigation and technical analysis, including the examination of nearly 50 to 60 CCTV camera footages collected from different locations.

Police Investigation Led to Arrest of the Auto Lifter

Vehicle theft cases, especially involving scooters and motorcycles, have become increasingly common in Delhi over the past few years. In many cases, auto lifter gangs target crowded marketplaces, residential colonies, metro parking areas, and roadside parking spots where vehicles are left unattended for long periods.

In this case, police officials from PS Rajouri Garden noticed a pattern in recent scooter theft complaints registered in the area. After several theft incidents, officers began closely monitoring CCTV footage from various routes and theft locations.

The investigation team included Head Constable Rakesh, Head Constable Mahender, Constable Sanjay, Constable Kamal, and Constable Vikram. The operation was conducted under the supervision of SHO Rajouri Garden Ravinder Joshi and ACP Rajouri Garden Sharat Chandra Nirmal.

Officials stated that the team worked continuously on secret information, local intelligence gathering, technical surveillance, and movement tracking of suspected criminals. Their efforts finally paid off on May 12, 2026, when the accused auto lifter was traced and apprehended from the Kuda Khatta area of Raghubir Nagar.

Police sources revealed that the accused attempted to move around discreetly in areas familiar to him, making it difficult for authorities to track him initially. However, constant surveillance and coordination among officers helped crack the case.

Stolen Scooty and Illegal Knife Recovered

During the arrest operation, police recovered one stolen red TVS N Torq scooty bearing registration number DL-11-6555 from the possession of the accused. Verification later confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen in a recently registered E-FIR under Section 305(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at PS Rajouri Garden.

Apart from the stolen scooty, officers also recovered an illegal buttondar knife from the accused. Following the recovery, a fresh FIR under Sections 25/54/59 of the Arms Act and Section 317(2) BNS was registered against him.

The recovery of the knife is significant because many auto lifter suspects often carry sharp weapons either for intimidation or to escape during confrontation. Police officials believe such recoveries help prevent potential violent incidents in the future.

During sustained interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to involvement in several additional vehicle theft cases within the jurisdiction of Rajouri Garden police station. Based on his disclosure, police recovered two more stolen scooters:

  • One New Aviator scooty bearing registration number DL-6S-2908
  • One Honda Activa bearing registration number DL-10-8051

All three recovered vehicles were seized according to legal procedure. Delhi Police also confirmed that videography of the search and seizure process was conducted using the e-Sakshya application to ensure transparency and proper digital evidence documentation.

Growing Concern Over Auto Lifter Gangs in Delhi

The arrest has once again drawn attention to the issue of auto lifter gangs operating across Delhi-NCR. Vehicle theft remains one of the most frequently reported property crimes in the national capital.

Experts say two-wheelers are especially vulnerable because they are easier to steal, dismantle, transport, or resell compared to cars. In many cases, stolen scooters are either sold in scrap markets, used for criminal activities, or transported to other states with forged documents.

An experienced auto lifter can reportedly steal a scooter within minutes if proper safety measures are not in place. Many thieves target vehicles parked in poorly lit streets, outside metro stations, or in crowded market areas where monitoring becomes difficult.

Police officials across Delhi have repeatedly advised citizens to use additional safety locks, GPS tracking systems, and secure parking facilities to reduce the risk of theft.

Crime analysts believe that economic pressure, unemployment, substance abuse, and criminal associations often push young individuals toward becoming part of auto lifter networks. In this case too, the accused reportedly admitted during interrogation that poor financial conditions and bad company influenced him to enter criminal activities.

Profile of the Accused

The arrested accused has been identified as:

Vishal alias Rohit
Son of Hansraj
Age: 25 years
Resident of Raghubir Nagar, Delhi

Police records indicate that the accused is already involved in multiple criminal cases related to theft, robbery, snatching, and Arms Act violations. Investigators suspect that he may have links with other local criminals involved in vehicle theft operations.

Officials are continuing interrogation to determine whether the accused acted alone or was part of a larger auto lifter gang operating in West Delhi. Police are also investigating whether additional stolen vehicles can be recovered based on his disclosures.

The accused’s criminal background highlights a recurring challenge faced by law enforcement agencies — repeat offenders returning to criminal activity despite previous arrests.

Technology Played a Key Role in Cracking the Case

One of the most notable aspects of this operation was the use of technical surveillance and CCTV analysis. Delhi Police officials reviewed nearly 50 to 60 CCTV clips during the investigation process.

Modern policing increasingly depends on digital tracking tools, surveillance cameras, mobile data analysis, and local intelligence gathering to identify suspects quickly. In urban crimes involving an auto lifter, CCTV footage often becomes the strongest lead for investigators.

In recent years, Delhi Police has expanded the use of digital policing systems, including e-FIR registration, electronic evidence management, and applications like e-Sakshya. Such systems improve transparency and strengthen courtroom evidence.

Police officials involved in the Rajouri Garden case deserve appreciation for combining traditional investigation methods with modern surveillance techniques. Their persistence and coordinated teamwork ultimately led to the arrest of the accused and recovery of stolen property.

Public Cooperation Remains Crucial

Police officers often emphasize that public awareness and cooperation are essential in preventing vehicle theft. Citizens are advised to immediately report suspicious movement around parking areas, abandoned vehicles, or individuals attempting to tamper with locks.

Many auto lifter cases are solved faster when eyewitnesses, security guards, shopkeepers, and local residents share information with investigators. Timely reporting also increases the chances of vehicle recovery before stolen vehicles are dismantled or transported elsewhere.

Authorities have urged vehicle owners to:

  • Install anti-theft alarms
  • Avoid isolated parking spots
  • Use handle locks and wheel locks
  • Park only in authorized areas
  • Keep copies of registration documents safely stored
  • Immediately file e-FIRs in case of theft

Strong Message from West District Police

The successful operation by PS Rajouri Garden sends a strong message to criminals involved in vehicle theft activities across West Delhi. The arrest of the accused auto lifter and the recovery of multiple stolen scooters demonstrate the active and vigilant approach adopted by Delhi Police.

Senior officers of West District Police praised the dedication and professionalism shown by the police team during the investigation. The operation reflected not only quick action but also patience and intelligence-based policing.

From examining dozens of CCTV clips to acting on secret inputs and conducting local surveillance, the police team displayed remarkable coordination throughout the operation. Such efforts strengthen public confidence in law enforcement agencies and reassure citizens that crimes like vehicle theft are being actively tackled.

The case also highlights how focused investigation and street-level intelligence can successfully dismantle habitual auto lifter activities in urban neighborhoods.

With interrogation still underway, investigators are hopeful that more disclosures and recoveries may follow in the coming days.
