Ramnagar Dehradun Express has officially begun operations, marking a significant milestone in Uttarakhand’s railway network by becoming the first direct train to connect the Kumaon and Garhwal regions. The newly launched service addresses a long-standing public demand for seamless rail connectivity between Ramnagar and Dehradun, reducing travel inconvenience while strengthening access to major religious, tourist, and commercial destinations across the state.
The inaugural service was virtually flagged off by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday in the presence of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami through video conferencing. Railway officials described the launch as an important step in improving regional mobility and expanding railway infrastructure in one of India’s most tourism-dependent Himalayan states.

Ramnagar Dehradun Express Ends Long Wait for Direct Rail Connectivity
For years, passengers travelling between the Kumaon and Garhwal divisions often had to rely on connecting trains or road transport, making journeys lengthy and less convenient. The introduction of Ramnagar Dehradun Express changes that by offering the first direct railway link between the two regions.
The train is expected to benefit thousands of daily passengers, including students, office workers, tourists, pilgrims, business travellers and local residents who regularly commute between these parts of Uttarakhand.
The launch also reflects the Indian Railways’ broader objective of improving regional connectivity in hill states by creating efficient transportation links between important economic and cultural centres.

Ramnagar Dehradun Express Schedule and Operations
According to the Railway Ministry, Ramnagar Dehradun Express will operate twice every week, providing scheduled services on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Train No. 15310 will depart from Ramnagar at 5:50 am and reach Dehradun at 12:40 pm.
The return journey, Train No. 15309, will leave Dehradun at 3:55 pm and arrive back in Ramnagar at 11:30 pm.
The train has been designed to ensure comfortable daytime travel while allowing passengers to complete official work, tourism activities or religious visits within a practical schedule.

Ramnagar Dehradun Express will stop at several key railway stations that serve both Uttarakhand and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
Major halts include:

Indian Railways has introduced Ramnagar Dehradun Express with a wide range of travel options to accommodate passengers from different income groups.

- AC 3-Tier
- AC Chair Car
- Sleeper Class
- Second Sitting
- General Coaches
This combination allows passengers to choose accommodation based on their budget and travel requirements while ensuring accessibility for both premium and affordable travel.
Railway Minister Highlights Better Regional Connectivity
Speaking during the inauguration, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Ramnagar Dehradun Express would significantly strengthen railway connectivity between Kumaon and Garhwal.
He noted that faster and more convenient travel would benefit residents as well as visitors exploring Uttarakhand’s religious, ecological and tourism destinations.
The minister emphasised that expanding railway infrastructure remains a priority for the government, particularly in states where tourism plays a major role in economic development.
Improved connectivity is expected to reduce dependence on road transport while offering passengers a safer, more comfortable and environmentally efficient travel option.

Rishikesh to Be Developed as a Feeder Railway Station
Alongside the launch of Ramnagar Dehradun Express, Ashwini Vaishnaw announced another important railway initiative for Uttarakhand.
He said Rishikesh railway station will be developed as a feeder station to reduce passenger congestion at Haridwar.
A comprehensive master plan is currently being prepared to expand railway capacity in the region and improve passenger movement between Haridwar and Rishikesh.
These upgrades are expected to become particularly valuable during major religious gatherings when millions of pilgrims travel to Uttarakhand.
Railway Station Redevelopment Across Uttarakhand
The Railway Minister also shared updates on station redevelopment projects currently underway in the state.
According to him, redevelopment work is progressing at 11 railway stations, including:
- Dehradun
- Haridwar Junction
- Harrawala
- Kashipur Junction
- Kichha
- Kotdwar
- Roorkee
- Kathgodam
- Lal Kuan Junction
- Ramnagar
- Tanakpur
These projects aim to modernise railway infrastructure by improving passenger amenities, station accessibility, waiting areas, circulation spaces and overall travel experience.
The redevelopment of Haridwar and Dehradun stations is receiving special attention due to the high volume of passengers using these stations throughout the year.
Officials said planning has focused on improving facilities for poor and middle-class passengers while ensuring station expansion does not create additional congestion.

Ashwini Vaishnaw also highlighted the encouraging response received by recently introduced railway services in Uttarakhand.
According to the minister, the Tanakpur-Nanded Express has witnessed positive passenger feedback since its introduction.
He further stated that the Vande Bharat Express services operating in the region continue to perform well, indicating growing demand for faster and modern rail transportation across northern India.
The success of these services has encouraged further investment in railway expansion throughout Uttarakhand.
Chief Minister Calls It a Major Milestone
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described the launch of Ramnagar Dehradun Express as another major achievement in strengthening the state’s transport infrastructure.
He said better railway connectivity would contribute to social development, economic growth, tourism expansion and easier movement of people across the state.
Dhami added that railway projects are playing an increasingly important role in integrating remote areas with major urban centres while supporting employment and local businesses.
Progress on the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Railway Project
During the programme, the Chief Minister also provided an update on the ambitious Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway line.
He said construction work is progressing rapidly and the project is expected to become one of Uttarakhand’s most significant transportation corridors.
Once completed, the railway line will improve connectivity to the Himalayan region while supporting tourism, pilgrimage, trade and regional development.
The project is also expected to reduce travel time for thousands of residents living in the hill districts.
Record Railway Investment in Uttarakhand
Dhami announced that Uttarakhand has received a record railway budget allocation of ₹4,769 crore, demonstrating the Centre’s continued focus on railway infrastructure in the state.
He also revealed that railway projects worth more than ₹40,000 crore are currently under implementation.
These investments cover railway lines, station redevelopment, passenger amenities, connectivity improvements and modernisation initiatives across multiple districts.

Preparations for Upcoming Kumbh
The state government and Indian Railways are also preparing infrastructure upgrades ahead of the upcoming Kumbh.
Several railway projects and additional train services are being planned for Haridwar to accommodate the expected surge in pilgrims.
Improved railway connectivity is expected to reduce congestion, improve crowd management and provide smoother transportation during one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.
Tourism and Local Economy Expected to Benefit
Ramnagar Dehradun Express is expected to provide substantial benefits beyond passenger convenience.
The train will improve accessibility to several important tourist destinations, including Jim Corbett National Park, one of India’s most visited wildlife reserves.
Pilgrims visiting Girija Devi Temple and Sitavani will also gain easier rail access.
Additionally, travellers heading towards the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit can use Haridwar and Dehradun as important connecting points, making the journey more convenient.
The Railway Ministry believes the service will particularly benefit residents of Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar and Dehradun districts in Uttarakhand, along with passengers from Moradabad and Bijnor districts in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
By connecting key tourism, pilgrimage and commercial centres, Ramnagar Dehradun Express is expected to strengthen regional mobility, encourage domestic tourism, support local businesses and improve access to essential services while reinforcing Uttarakhand’s expanding railway network.
