In a major breakthrough against rising snatching crime in the national capital, Delhi Police has arrested two interstate snatchers involved in a gold chain snatching case reported from Dwarka South. The operation, led by the team of Dwarka South Police Station, resulted in the recovery of a snatched gold chain and the motorcycle used in the crime.
The arrest became even more significant because the main snatcher had fled nearly 1000 kilometers away from Delhi and was hiding in Bihar. Through technical surveillance, CCTV tracking, and intelligence gathering, police managed to trace and arrest the accused despite multiple challenges on the ground.
Officials identified the accused as Umesh alias Kartik and Ritik Prasad. Police records show that both snatchers are repeat offenders with several criminal cases already registered against them in Haryana and Bihar. Umesh alone reportedly has 14 previous criminal involvements related to theft, robbery, snatching, excise violations, and arms-related offences.
The case once again highlights how organized snatcher gangs continue to target vulnerable citizens, especially elderly people during morning walks and isolated public hours.
Morning Walk Turns Into A Crime Scene
The incident took place on April 7, 2026, in Sector 9 Dwarka, one of the busy residential areas of South-West Delhi. According to police officials, the complainant had stepped out of her house for a morning walk when the crime occurred.
As she reached near the DDA Park in Sector 9, two bike-borne snatchers approached her suddenly. Before she could react, they snatched her gold chain and escaped rapidly on a motorcycle.
Police said the entire crime happened within seconds, which is typical in chain snatching cases. Snatchers usually target isolated spots, elderly citizens, and morning walkers because they believe victims may not resist or identify them clearly.
A PCR call was immediately received at the police station, after which local police teams and the crack investigation unit rushed to the spot. Based on the victim’s statement, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was launched.
Snatcher Networks And Their Growing Pattern
Over the past few years, chain snatching has become one of the most common street crimes in Delhi-NCR. Police officials and crime analysts say most snatchers operate in small groups using stolen or borrowed motorcycles. These gangs often move between states like Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar to avoid police tracking.
Experts say a snatcher typically chooses crowded roads, parks, or residential colonies where women and elderly people are likely to wear gold jewellery openly. The snatchers quickly identify targets, approach at high speed, snatch valuables, and escape before people around can react.
In this case too, investigators believe the accused carefully selected the victim after spotting her gold chain during the morning walk.
Police sources revealed that the accused entered Delhi specifically to commit snatching. Their primary motive was “easy money” through quick resale of stolen jewellery.
Massive CCTV Investigation By Police
After the incident, the investigation team started scanning CCTV footage from the crime scene and nearby roads. According to officials, more than 500 CCTV cameras were checked to identify the movement of the snatchers.
The police team included ASI Anil, ASI Mahavir, HC Praveen Yadav, HC Surender, HC Bhushan Prasad, and HC Dilbag under the supervision of Inspector Rajesh Kumar Sah and ACP Kishor Kumar Rewala.
Investigators tracked the motorcycle route frame by frame through multiple cameras installed in residential sectors, traffic points, and nearby roads. Police also used local informers to gather clues regarding the identity of the snatchers.
This detailed surveillance eventually led investigators to discover that the main snatcher had escaped to Siwan district in Bihar.
Crime experts often describe CCTV analysis as one of the strongest tools in solving urban snatching cases. Even when faces are not visible, police can trace clothing patterns, vehicle movement, route direction, and timing.
Officials said this case was solved mainly because of patient surveillance work and coordination between Delhi Police and local authorities in Bihar.
Bihar Hideout And Dramatic Arrest
After tracing the location of the accused, a dedicated police team traveled from Delhi to Siwan, Bihar to arrest the snatcher.
However, the operation was not simple. According to police officials, a wedding ceremony was taking place near the accused’s house at the time of the raid. The area was crowded with villagers and guests, making it difficult for officers to identify and capture the suspect without alerting him.
Despite the challenge, the police continued secret surveillance and monitored movements carefully.
Finally, through technical inputs and local intelligence, the main snatcher Umesh alias Kartik was arrested on April 24, 2026 from his native village in Siwan district.
Police described him as the mastermind behind the snatching operation.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to the crime and explained how the snatching was planned.
How The Snatcher Planned The Crime
According to investigators, Umesh had been staying in Gujarat before the incident. There, he contacted his associate Ritik and asked him to arrange a motorcycle so they could commit crimes and earn fast money.
Ritik reportedly arranged a Bajaj Pulsar 220 motorcycle belonging to a friend who was currently in jail. However, the motorcycle required repairs. Umesh then sent money to get the vehicle repaired before the crime.
Police said both snatchers came to Delhi during early morning hours on April 7 with the sole intention of committing snatching incidents.
As they spotted an elderly woman wearing a gold chain near the park, they targeted her immediately. After the snatching, they escaped towards Gurugram and later fled to Bihar fearing arrest.
Investigators believe the snatchers intentionally left Delhi quickly because they knew CCTV surveillance could expose them.
After staying in Bihar for some time and noticing that police had not reached them immediately, Ritik returned to Gurugram while Umesh continued hiding.
Second Snatcher Arrested In Gurugram
Following the arrest of Umesh, police conducted further interrogation and identified the involvement of the second accused, Ritik Prasad.
Based on disclosure statements and technical tracking, police teams arrested Ritik from Gurugram, Haryana.
During questioning, Ritik also confessed to his role in the snatching incident. Police recovered the stolen gold chain from his possession.
The recovery of stolen property is considered crucial in snatching investigations because it directly connects the accused to the crime.
Police also recovered the Bajaj Pulsar 220 motorcycle used during the snatching operation.
Long Criminal History Of The Snatchers
One of the most alarming aspects of the case is the criminal background of both accused.
Police records show that Umesh alias Kartik has been involved in at least 14 previous criminal cases. These include theft, robbery, snatching, excise violations, arms act offences, and prison-related NDPS violations.
Officials also revealed that he had previously been convicted and sentenced to imprisonment in Gurugram jail.
Similarly, Ritik Prasad has four previous criminal involvements, including robbery and theft cases registered in Gurugram.
Police sources say repeat offenders often return to snatching because it provides quick cash and requires limited planning. Most snatchers use motorcycles because they allow fast escape through narrow lanes and traffic-heavy routes.
Crime analysts say many repeat snatchers operate across state borders because it becomes harder for local police stations to track their movement patterns.
Why Elderly Citizens Become Easy Targets
Street crime experts say elderly people are among the most vulnerable victims in chain snatching cases. Morning walks, temple visits, markets, and isolated roads are commonly targeted by snatchers.
Women wearing visible gold jewellery become easy targets because snatchers can identify valuable items instantly from moving vehicles.
Police departments across India frequently advise citizens to avoid displaying expensive jewellery in public areas, especially during early morning and late evening hours.
In several cases, victims also suffer injuries because the sudden force used by a snatcher can cause people to fall on roads or pavements.
Officials say awareness and vigilance remain important in reducing such crimes.
Interstate Crime And Policing Challenges
This case also highlights the growing challenge of interstate criminal networks operating between Delhi, Haryana, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.
Snatchers often commit crimes in one state and hide in another to delay investigation. In many cases, they use fake identities, rented rooms, or relatives’ houses to avoid detection.
Police officials say coordination between different state police departments has become extremely important in solving such crimes quickly.
In this operation, Delhi Police worked with local authorities in Bihar and Haryana to trace, identify, and arrest both accused successfully.
The use of technical surveillance, intelligence gathering, and CCTV mapping played a major role in the arrests.
Police Investigation And Public Safety
Officials from Delhi Police said the case demonstrates the importance of rapid response and detailed investigation in snatching incidents.
The successful arrest of the snatchers within weeks of the crime has been viewed as a significant achievement because the accused had already crossed state borders and attempted to hide in remote areas.
Investigators also emphasized that quick FIR registration, CCTV analysis, and informer networks continue to remain the backbone of urban policing against snatcher gangs.
The recovery of the gold chain and the motorcycle further strengthened the case against both accused.
Police have now linked the accused to other criminal activities and are continuing further investigation regarding additional snatching incidents that may involve the same gang.
The arrests have brought relief to local residents of Dwarka, where chain snatching incidents have created fear among morning walkers and senior citizens in recent years.
