Google Pay is sharpening its focus on strengthening India’s domestic digital payments ecosystem rather than expanding into cross-border payments and remittances, according to senior company executive Kunal Rana. Speaking at the third edition of FinInvest in New Delhi, Rana said the company is investing heavily in improving transaction speed, reliability, security, and user trust while leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to empower small businesses across the country.

Google Pay not prioritising cross-border payments and remittances

Google Pay says it has prevented fraud worth over ₹13,000 crore

Apart from digital payments, Rana also highlighted the transformative role artificial intelligence could play for India’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to him, AI has the potential to level the playing field between small merchants and large corporations.
Large businesses traditionally possess access to extensive customer analytics, inventory management tools, marketing insights, and business intelligence platforms.
However, AI-powered solutions could now make many of these capabilities available to neighbourhood stores and small enterprises at a much lower cost.

When asked about the future of the policy, Rana said Google Pay would continue operating under the existing regulatory framework and would abide by any decisions taken by the Government of India, lawmakers, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
